But we\u2019ve gotten to be close very quickly. We went to the march together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe march?\u201d I say, \u2019cause I\u2019m wondering if [Mrs. Silverman] belongs to SNCC too, like Yolanda\u2019s Aunt Cheryl, and goes marching in the South.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes, the march on Washington last summer,\u201d she says. \u201cDavid came with us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yolanda\u2019s jaw hasn\u2019t exactly dropped, but she\u2019s impressed. So am I, actually. When they show footage on TV of the people who went to the march on Washington in August, you can see that a lot of them were white. I keep wondering where they\u2019re from, \u2019cause I never meet any of them around here. I don\u2019t know any white person except President Kennedy who has the courage to stand up for colored people\u2019s civil rights. Most white people don\u2019t want to give them any at all. And now I\u2019m actually meeting one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou went to Washington?\u201d Yolanda says, turning to David.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was really something,\u201d he tells her. \u201cExcept for all the singing on the bus.
