My Author Visits work well for both large group events and smaller book clubs. A thirty-minute visit includes a 15- minute reading followed by a Q&amp;A.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpb_text_column us_custom_a7713a28\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><h3><b><span>IT\u2019S NEVER TOO LATE<\/span><\/b><br \/>\n<b><span>Getting Published as You\u2019re Getting Older<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n<p>This hour-long visit consists of a 20-minute reading followed by a discussion of my late-to-the game publication journey and a Q&amp;A. The presentation tracks the unlikely markers of a career that began in mid-life:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First novel published at age 45, followed by three more<\/li>\n<li>Named a finalist for the National Book Award at age 48<\/li>\n<li>First story collection published at 68; the second, at 76<\/li>\n<li>Short fiction and creative nonfiction published in more than seventy literary journals since the mid-1980s<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpb_text_column\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><h2>For Young Adults<\/h2>\n<p>I also visit schools and libraries to discuss my young-adult novels with young people. I tailor the library and school visits\u2014for grades 7 through 12\u2014to the individual group or class. Visits may include a reading, along with a talk on the work of writing fiction, or a discussion based on one of the powerful themes in my novels.\u00a0Popular choices include:<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpb_text_column us_custom_a7713a28\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><h3><strong>1960s: Interracial Friendship and the Civil Rights Movement<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Drawing on the interracial friendship depicted in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.maryannmcguigan.com\/books\/where-you-belong\/\">Where You Belong<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.maryannmcguigan.com\/books\/morning-in-a-different-place\/\">Morning in a Different Place<\/a>, this talk explores the Civil Rights Movement of the early 1960s and what race relations were like in New York during that time.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpb_text_column us_custom_a7713a28\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><h3><strong>When There\u2019s Drinking in the Family<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Drawing from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.maryannmcguigan.com\/books\/crossing-into-brooklyn\/\">Crossing Into Brooklyn<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.maryannmcguigan.com\/books\/where-you-belong\/\">Where You Belong<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.maryannmcguigan.com\/books\/morning-in-a-different-place\/\">Morning in a Different Place<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.maryannmcguigan.com\/books\/cloud-dancer\/\">Cloud Dancer<\/a>, this talk explores the effects on young people when a parent drinks too much.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpb_text_column us_custom_a7713a28\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><h3><strong>If I Can Do It, So Can You<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This talk is ideal for young people who want to be writers, especially those who are convinced the odds are against them.
