In “Beloved,” the opening story in That Very Place, a woman is waiting for her pants to dry in a Laundromat in Queens. Everyone else is waiting for the arrival of the bride, who’s about to be married in this unlikely place. For Maria, the ceremony here isn’t just odd; it’s agonizing. Because she’s about to shut down the foolish idea of domestic bliss. She’s made up her mind to give up her child.
This story, which features a cameo appearance from my former (and favorite) boss Michael Bloomberg, first appeared in Prime Number Magazine and was nominated for a Pushcart Prize. Hope you enjoy this sneak peek.
